Tinea capitis in kids

Tinea Capitis is a contagious fungal disease observed on the scalp. This condition occurs due to the attack of two main types of fungi called Microsporum and Trichophyton. The invasion of these two species is most commonly found among children belonging to the age group of 4-14 years. This condition can be embarrassing for children as it causes permanent hair loss or partial hair loss along with the formation of visible lesions on the scalp area. Children who spend most of their time in crowded areas like schools and child care centers are most susceptible to getting infected with this infection. Tinea Capitis, also known as scalp ringworm spreads fast when a child establishes any contact with an infected person. Sharing of common utilities like comb, tooth brush and skin contact are some of the main reasons for the spread of this disease causing fungi. Some of the most possible symptoms of this disease observed in kids are appearance of bald patches, itching sensation, immense dandruff, black spots, pus-filled lesions, swelling and red bumps. The best method of ridding the child of this disease is by giving him a regular dosage of oral anti-fungal medicines along with a shampoo rich in ingredients like selenium sulfide or ketoconazole.
