Jock itch diagnosis

Jock itch is usually caused due to fungal infection of the skin. It is characterized by the presence of red, itchy rashes. There may be pustules and pimples associated with the rashes. Sometimes, the skin in the affected area tends to crack and peel. Jock itch can be diagnosed by a visual inspection of the affected region. Your doctor may ask some questions about your lifestyle like whether you are involved in sports or other such activities. He may also ask about symptoms like itching, discharge and excessive urination. In addition, your doctor will also want to know about medications you are currently using and other such details. He will then examine the affected region and check for characteristic symptoms. A Wood’s lamp which emits long wavelength UV light can be used to examine the skin. Some lab tests may also be recommended to find out the causative organism. The skin in the affected region is gently scrapped and the scrapings are mounted on a glass slide, stained with Potassium hydroxide and observed under a microscope. The characteristics of the cell and hyphae will help the microbiologist to identify the causative organism. Once the organism causing the infection is identified, it is easier to suggest a course of treatment.
